Did you know that 41% of dogs and 33% of cats are considered overweight? Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder seen in cats and dogs in Australia. Overweight pets are more likely to suffer from heart disease, cancer, joint problems, diabetes and liver disease.
All pets have an ideal weight for their size and breed. One way to check for obesity is to try to feel your pet’s ribs. If you can’t feel them without applying too much pressure then they are probably overweight.
If your pet is overweight, you may notice some of the following signs:
- ribs cannot easily be felt when running your hand along your pet’s side
- loss of an obvious waist
- collar needs loosening
- difficulty in walking
- slow movement
- shortness of breath
- bad temper
- sleeping more than usual.
Weight gain is the result of an increase in body fat. This is usually caused by eating too much, especially when combined with lack of exercise. But there can be other contributing factors including age, breed and medical problems.
It is important to note that even if your pet does not show signs of being overweight, it’s a good idea to have regular weight checks to make sure an ideal weight is maintained.
The first step to helping your pet lose weight is to make an appointment for a FREE weight check.
Our staff are trained to help you assess your pet’s weight. We can offer you advice on how to follow a weight-loss program for your dog or cat. This involves regular weigh-ins and contact with a staff member so that you get continued free support and guidance for your individual requirements. From here we can assess what weight management plan will work best for you and your pet.
