How to collect a urine sample at home

As part of your cat's wellness exam a urine sample needs to be collected from your cat for us to run urine tests. Here are some helpful tips on how to collect this sample, avoiding the splash back!

From the kitty litter tray, remove your cat's regular cat litter. Clean the tray, making sure it is rinsed thoroughly and dried.

If your cat will urinate in an empty litter tray, put the tray down and wait. If your cat won't urinate in an empty litter tray, try using non-absorbent products such as aquarium pebbles, torn glossy magazine pages or plastic beads. Once your cat has urinated, collect the sample in a clean plastic container or a urine sample pot provided by your Pets Health Veterinary Practice.

The urine sample should be given to us as soon as possible. The sample can be stored temporarily in the refrigerator but for most accurate results the sample should be tested within half an hour of collecting.
