TRADITIONAL CHINESE VET MEDICINE

Holistic & Acupuncture Care for Pets
At Hilton Vet Centre, we believe great veterinary care looks at the whole picture — not just symptoms, but your pet’s overall wellbeing, lifestyle, and long-term comfort.
That’s why we’re proud to offer holistic treatment options with Dr Erika, who brings over a decade of experience in integrative veterinary medicine. She is certified in Traditional Chinese Herbal Therapy, Food Therapy, and Acupuncture, and is passionate about combining these approaches with modern veterinary care to support better outcomes for her patients.
A Tailored, Whole-Pet Approach
Every pet is different — and so is every treatment plan.
During your consultation, Dr Erika will assess your pet’s individual needs and provide you with tailored treatment recommendations. These may include a series of acupuncture sessions, diet management, and herbal therapies or supplements. In combination, these elements are used to support the balance of Qi and promote healing, comfort, and long-term wellbeing for your pet.
What is Traditional Chinese Vet Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is a holistic approach that focuses on balance within the body.
At its core is the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”) — the body’s vital energy — which flows through pathways known as meridians. When this energy flows freely and evenly, the body maintains a healthy balance between Yin and Yang.
When that balance is disrupted — whether through injury, illness, or stress — it can lead to pain, inflammation, or disease. TCVM aims to restore this balance, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal.
Restoring Balance with Herbal Medicine
In TCVM, Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) is used to help restore balance in the body by supporting Yin and Yang, strengthening immune function, improving Qi (energy) and circulation, and promoting healthy digestion and nutrient absorption. It is also used to help clear toxin buildup and support areas of genetic weakness to reduce future susceptibility to illness.
As a result, Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) may be used as part of treatment for a range of conditions, including:
- Inflammatory disorders (such as osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain)
- Cancer (neoplasia)
- Immune-mediated diseases
- Allergies
- Endocrine disorders (such as diabetes and thyroid conditions)
- Liver disease
- Behavioural or cognitive concerns
Acupuncture for Pets
Acupuncture is a gentle, well-established therapy that involves placing very fine needles into specific points on the body.
These points correspond to the body’s natural energy pathways and nervous system. By stimulating them, acupuncture can:
- Improve circulation
- Reduce inflammation
- Relieve pain
- Support the body’s natural healing processes
While rooted in ancient practice, acupuncture is increasingly supported by modern research and is widely used alongside conventional veterinary treatments.
What Can Acupuncture Help With?
Acupuncture can be particularly beneficial for a range of chronic and complex conditions, including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Intervertebral disc disease
- Nerve injuries
- Acral lick dermatitis
- Chronic stress-related inflammation
Respiratory conditions
- Chronic bronchitis
- Feline asthma
Gastrointestinal conditions
- Pancreatitis
- Chronic diarrhoea
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
